ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a condition that affects your ability to pay attention and sit still. It’s one of the most common mental health disorders affecting children, though many adults also experience ADHD. Alison offers medication management and psychotherapy to help you or your child overcome ADHD and live the best quality of life possible.

Which symptoms can ADHD cause?

ADHD can cause the following symptoms:

  • Not being able to keep focus
  • Hyperactivity
  • Difficulty sitting still
  • Excessive movement
  • Impulsivity
  • Blurting out answers at school
  • Disorganization
  • Poor grades at school
  • Decreased performance at work
  • Poor time management and planning skills
  • Mood swings
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty coping with stress
  • Problems with multitasking
  • Forgetting things often
  • Low self-esteem
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Low frustration tolerance

Many adults, teenagers, and children don’t realize they have ADHD. See Alison if you or a loved one suspect ADHD to get the treatment needed to be successful.

What are the risk factors for ADHD?

It’s not entirely clear what causes ADHD, but several risk factors may play a role. Examples include:

  • Family history of ADHD
  • Lead or other toxin exposure as a child
  • Problems with the central nervous system
  • Smoking, drinking, or using illicit drugs during pregnancy
  • Being born prematurely

Seek treatment for you or a loved one if ADHD causes problems in your personal life, in school, or at work.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

To diagnose ADHD, Alison asks questions about your symptoms, lifestyle, medical history, moods, emotions, and more during a psychiatric evaluation. She may use adult rating scales or checklists. Alison discusses your preferences to establish which treatment plan works best for you.

Brain Revive Psychiatry, LLC, also provides genetic testing to determine which medicines are best based on your genetic makeup.

How is ADHD treated?

Treating ADHD may involve taking medications, undergoing therapy, changing your diet or exercise regimen, or a combination of treatments. Alison might meet with you in person or virtually for psychotherapy sessions.

It’s also helpful to create a regular routine, maintain a calendar, and make to-do lists. Get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, and choose whole foods vs. highly processed foods whenever possible.
